Right and left marginal cirri present, with variable number of rows of other ventral cirri; transverse and frontal cirri often differentiated; body elongate; macronuclei two to many in number.

[The family seems overlarge; perhaps Uroleptus and close relatives should be removed. And do Gonostomum and Trachelostyla (with others?) belong even in the following suborder, family Oxytrichidae? Uroleptoides also represents a problem. Etc.!]
